What is ITIL?

ITIL framework is one of the sources of Best practices in service management. It contains a set of practices for managing IT services.

What is ITIL?

§  Body of knowledge used by organizations globally to establish and improve capabilities in service management

§  Set of best practice publications for IT service management

§ ISO/IEC 20000 provides a formal and universal standard for organizations aiming to establish excellent service management capabilities

§  Describes IT service life cycle in 5 books. Those books provide guidance on a service based on its stage within the lifecycle. They contain a set of ITSM processes that describe the inputs, outputs, activities and capabilities required to ensure services are delivered in alignment to the business needs

§  Provides a baseline for planning, implementation and measurement

 “ITIL Core” best practice is applicable to all types of organizations which provides services to a business. whereas “ITIL Complementary Guidance” is a complementary set of publications with guidance specific to industry sectors, organization types, technology architectures and operating models.
