Resources and Capabilities in ITIL

Resources are

ü  Direct inputs for production

ü  Physical or virtual entities of limited availability which are used to support future growth and sustainability

ü  Not immutable. They can change, improve or degrade

§  Infrastructure

§  Applications

§  Information

§  People

 

Capabilities are

ü  Organizations ability to coordinate, control, deploy and transform resources to produce value

ü  Soft assets

Some of the Capabilities:

§  Management

§  Organization

§  Processes

§  Knowledge

§  People

Please note that “People” are part of both Resources and Capabilities.

It is relatively easy to acquire resources compared to capabilities which are built over years.

The service relationship between service providers and customers require use of assets

There are 2 types of assets

·         Capabilities

·         Resources


Resources can be acquired but capabilities must be developed.

Service providers should develop or grow distinctive capabilities to differentiate them from their competitors.

Governance is the single overarching area that ties IT and the business together. It ensures that policies and strategies are implemented. It is accountable for defining roles and responsibilities, metrics and reporting. It ensures processes are correctly followed.

A Management System is the framework of processes, policy, standards, guidelines, functions and tools that ensures an Organization to achieve its objectives.
